40 minutes North of Edinburgh, we arrived in Kirkaldy and drove between the kissing trees, an iconic pair of sycamores that stand together on a hilltop, their sighting signalling that we had almost reached our destination.
We turned down a gravel track that lead to the farm that was going to be our home for the next few days and within minutes we spotted a trio of pheasants, their vibrant, coloured feathers demanding our attention in the last of the light.
This is a rural retreat immersed in nature. To the front of our cottage was a field where the silhouettes of frolicking deer could be seen playfully skipping across the skyline at dusk, to the left, sea views on the horizon.
We’d set off earlier that morning (my parents and I) and taken a slow drive up from Newcastle on the coastal route through Northumberland, stopping at Drift, a cliff edge cafe with the most incredible views.
